This is the first in a four-part series about Wilderness Therapy. Upon arrival, clients have very low motivation. How can we motivate someone to change? Studies show that people want to be self-directed. In other words, they have to shift from an external to internal motivation source. Self-determination theory says three psychological needs must be met: Autonomy- the need to control our own lives; Competence- the need to be effective in dealing with the world around us; and Relatedness- the need to have close relationships with others.

Once clients are in the wilderness, motivation manifests itself naturally, easily and quickly. But why is motivation so important? It can actually change our beliefs! Self-efficacy is the belief in one’s ability to succeed. If a client is motivated, she believes she has control over her life direction. That leads to change.
